BTS in my room?Get a new stage that rose to Corona 19.

"Non-face business digital innovation technology development" will be carried out in earnest to cope with digital transitions across society and the economy following the spread of non-face-to-face services triggered by Corona19 such as remote work, education and unmanned services. Policy briefings will introduce some of the 40 tasks selected for the project, which will be implemented by the Ministry of Science, Technology, Information and Communication with the aim of strengthening the competitiveness of local companies and preempting the market. (Editor's Note)

The spread of Corona 19 has also brought about a major change in the performing world. Normally, idol singers such as BTS would have been in the midst of overseas tours as well as domestic performances, met fans and made profits, but everything was canceled due to the Corona 19 fan-democratic situation, and the performance industry was red-lighted. Recently, however, some performing circles, including big agencies, broadcasters and artists, have taken the crisis as an opportunity to find an unexpected way out of "online performances" to produce positive results. Non-face-to-face cultural performances are becoming a new cultural trend for audiences who have been deprived of opportunities to experience culture and art due to social distances.

IDo Bangbangcon·Villon, drive!...what's the profit? 1.8 billion won per 10 minutes.

As the most representative example, BTS created profits by holding its first paid online concert in June, starting with BTS Concert, which they enjoy in their rooms, in April. Bangbangcon has been viewed in a total of 107 countries, including South Korea and the United States, Britain, Japan and China, and has shown signs of recording a maximum number of simultaneous users of 756,600. The figure is equivalent to 15 stadium performances that can accommodate more than 50,000 people.

Big Hit Entertainment established a full-fledged profit model after seeing the possibility of online concerts through Bangbangcon, and held its second online concert under the name "BTS MAP OF THE SOUL ON:E" from April 10-11. A total of 993,000 paid users logged on to the concert. Calculating the average viewer price of 54,500 won, the revenue earned from the concert is estimated at 49.1 billion won and 1.81 billion won per 10 minutes. In particular, this concert exceeded the limits of non-face-to-face concerts such as the stage, augmented reality (AR), and extended reality (XR), which were set up eight times more than the Bangbangcon.

In addition, SuperM, WayV, NCT DREAM, NCT 127 and TVXQ and Super Junior performed successfully through Beyond Live. Beyond Live is the world's first online-only paid concert platform created by SM Entertainment, adding stage production using AR technology and real-time interactive communication.

Non-face Realistic Telepresence and Performance Platform

In line with these changes in the times brought about by Corona 19, the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) is seeking to develop non-face-to-face realistic telepresence and performance platform technologies. Telepresence is a combination of television, which means video, and Presence, which means existence and reality, which refers to a system that allows participants to feel as vivid as if they were actually together in the place through virtual reality technology called digital display.

With Corona 19, the company has started to discover non-face-to-face cultural performance services and develop technologies to create an IT platform for popular cultural performances as sales damage in the performance and exhibition sectors and the number of cancellations of performances increases.

In particular, the purpose of this technology is to provide realistic content and broadcasting platforms that can be easily produced by small cultural performance organizations as well as large entertainment agencies, broadcasting stations and public cultural performance organizations.

Lim Sung-yong, a senior researcher at ETRI (Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute), explained, "To compensate for low-definition problems of existing VR (virtual reality) technologies, high-resolution 8K videos are used to ensure high-quality of HD or higher based on viewing angle."

"We want to provide ultra-low delay images based on remote multi-cameras that are suitable for remote or mobile environments and provide immersive performance environments without interruption and implement synchronization technology," said Lim, a senior researcher at the institute. In particular, he added, "We want to create a platform that allows performers to produce remote collaborative culture, performances, and arts based on 5G, cloud, and mobile edge computing (MEC) as well as real-time optical night vision video processing technology, as well as optical night vision video and augmented reality (AR)."

The concept of a non-face-to-face cultural performance platform is also.

Post-corona era, overcoming and immersion in non-face-to-face environment ↑

The key is ultra-low delay. ETRI realizes ultra-low delay video acquisition and synchronization technology based on remote multi-cameras so that audiences can immerse themselves in non-face-to-face situations. It will also develop real-time acquisition, coding and transmission technologies to maintain synchronization of multiple 4K-class high-quality images and implement performers' images by utilizing multicameri at remote locations.

In order to overcome limitations that reduce immersion due to limited viewing angles and screen size compared to performance sites, the existing technology will implement 5G, cloud, and MEC-based 8K-level optical night vision processing technology. "We are going to develop a technology that creates and streams 8K ultra-high-quality optical night video in real time using high-performance processors in cloud and MEC environments and ultra-low delay 5G network." said Lim, a senior researcher at the institute. In addition, the video of interest generated can be edited by automatically recognizing and tracking the performers' center and stage areas of interest.

It also diversifies panoramic, VR, AR media and content through this technology. To this end, the company will use the real-life media industry, which remains in CG-based games or low-definition hands-on media and content, to expand it to non-face-to-face video services, AR and MR services based on due diligence. Senior Researcher Lim added, "To increase audience accessibility, 5G and cloud are applied to enable high-definition consumption in mobile terminals."

Cultural performance groups are easy to...Collaborative production platform between performers

ETRI is testing technologies that increase sense of immersion such as AR and VR, focusing on public institutions, large agencies, and telecommunication companies. However, in order to prevent such technologies from leading to a winner-take-all structure centered on large agencies, large streaming platforms, and state-run performance groups, cultural and artistic organizations are also developing technologies that can be easily utilized. "By upgrading existing AR and VR technologies, we provide end-to-end solutions for non-face-to-face cultural performance services based on 8K-class ultra-high-quality realistic videos," said Lim, a senior researcher at the institute.

It will expand to various industries as well as simple 2D video-based VoD services. It will be used as a long-term profit structure environment by streaming and live broadcasting real-time cultural performances, automatically selecting and editing AI-based areas of interest.

Create a remote collaborative cultural performance art production platform for optical night vision and AR-based performers. It will share wide-ranging and augmented reality videos among performers to complete a collaborative production platform that can simultaneously break up. It implements 3D walkdown object creation, transmission, and interactive control technology.

The technology development will be difficult to launch immediately, but the technical demonstration will be carried out by next year in cooperation with cultural performance organizations and joint research institutes MBC. "We aim to conduct about two on-site tests this year and prove them next year after setting them up at the concert hall," Lim said. "The big goal is to provide a way for various cultural organizations to directly utilize our technology through demonstration." ETRI applied the technology under development for two days on April 23 and 24 to concerts and soccer games.

Completed in preparation for perceptual changes in culture, performance and art...Realistic Media Industry Explosive Role

The non-face-to-face cultural performance platform technology can be expected to solve national and social problems in the post-corona era. "We will increase the role of realistic media as a means of solving social problems that provide experiences and profit-taking structures to enjoy new cultures in preparation for serious industrial changes in the cultural, performance and art sectors," said Lim, a senior researcher at the institute.

It will also serve as a catalyst to boost the realistic media industry. He predicted that VR and AR experience-type services that are dependent on low-definition and computer graphics will serve as a catalyst to bring stagnant real-life media industries that are mainstream to 8K x 4K levels that can be consumed by various terminals by raising viewing angles, resolutions, and frames to 8K x 4K levels that are more than 100 degrees.

Securing global competitiveness in AI-based automated relay markets

It can also prepare for the AI-based automatic relay market, which is led by global IT companies. High-capacity video data, one of the key technologies of the fourth industrial revolution represented by big data and artificial intelligence, can be combined with AI technologies applicable to the industry to secure global competitiveness in the AI-based automatic broadcasting sector, which will later be led by research and development by global IT companies such as IBM, lntel, Google and Facebook.

Above all, Lim, a senior researcher, expected that social costs will be reduced in various areas, including teleconference, education, medical care, military training and security, which function free meetings, communication and experiences among people without restrictions on time and space.
